The restoration of a lasting peace in Mali is essential for long term stability in the Sahel region and in a broader sense for Africa and Europe. At the request of the Malian Government and on the basis of UN resolutions, in particular the UN Security Council Resolution 2085, the Member States of the European Union agreed to establish a mission to train the Malian Armed Forces (MaAF), in the framework of the EU Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The First Mandate for the EU-Training Mission in Mali was established in February 2013. In May 2014 the second Mandate was decided which will last until May 2016.

The EUTM Mali mission

In order to continue providing military training and advice to the Malian Armed Forces and G5 Sahel the Council of the European Union approved the Concil Decision 2018/716 for the beginning of EUTM Mali`s fourth Mandate, which will last until 18 May 2020.

To meet the operational needs of the FAMa, EUTM Mali will have several important objectives.

Organization

Organization

The main locations of EUTM Mali deployment are Bamako and Koulikoro. However, since the approval of 3rd mandate, EUTM Mali extended its activities until the river Niger loop, including the cities of Gao and Timbuktu.

EUTM Mali Deployment

The majority of the EUTM Mali contingent is deployed between Bamako and Koulikoro.

However, since 2016, its activities extend throughout southern Mali to the river Niger loop.

BAMAKO

BAMAKO

The Mission Force Headquarters (MFHQ) and the Advisory Task Force (ATF) are deployed in Bamako. Overall, it represents around 150 military personnel.

Koulikoro

Koulikoro Training Camp (KTC) is the base on which most of EUTM Mali’s contingent is concentrated, almost 400 people. It also hosts an important part of the training and advisory activities developed by EUTM Mali. 

Decentralization

Decentralization

Since the approval of the 3rd mandate, training and advisoring activities have been developed throughout the Malian geography. For this puropse, EUTM Mali created the CMATT model, having implemented since 2016 12 CMATTs in 7 different locations (Segou, Gao, Sikasso, Kati, Kayes, Timbuktu and Sevare).
