“EUTM has contributed to the training of more than 5000 soldiers” at the Boubacar Sada Sy Training Centre in Koulikoro.

On 18th May, Colonel Issa Kaloga publicly thanked the EUTM contingent, officials from the Malian security forces and traditional authorities for the work carried out by EUTM MALI at the Boubacar Sada Sy Training Centre in Koulikoro (CIBSKK) in support of the Malian Armed Forces (MaAF) over the past ten years.

Colonel Kaloga noted the active participation of the European mission in the training of more than five thousand military personnel of all ranks at its facilities, highlighting the support offered to the Inter-Arms Tactical Groups, leadership and logistics.

For his part, the EUTM force commander also referred to the close collaboration and mutual respect between the Malian forces and the European personnel, hoping that EUTM can continue to be “a reliable partner in whom to place their trust to serve the interests of the Malian people”.

After these years of training, MaAF is now a more competent, better equipped and better trained armed force capable of responding to today’s security challenges,” he said, noting that some of these challenges, such as the complex interaction between terrorist organisations and organised crime, constitute a constant threat to the Malian people as a whole. In this context, he stressed that “the Malian people can only justify their confidence in their armed forces by their professionalism and their respect for human rights”. The fight against terrorism in no way justifies human rights violations, and impunity must be fought with severity and urgence.

During these ten years, EUTM has worked, and will continue to work hand in hand, not only with the MaAF, but also with other international partners, such as the G5 Sahel joint force, in order to contribute to the common commitment to improve security in the region.

In this framework of partnership and continued support to the MaAF, on June 1st the entire EUTM contingent will be transferred to the city of Bamako where it will continue to demonstrate the European Union’s commitment to the Malian people and its armed forces.
